Donna Levin has twenty years experience as a writer and ghostwriter of fiction and non-fiction, and as a teacher, editor, book reviewer and author interviewer. Her books include the novels Extraordinary Means, California Street, Get That Novel Started! and Get That Novel Written! Her papers are included in Boston University's Howard Gotlieb's 20th Century archives.

Donna combines a critical eye as an editor with a supportive approach. Her philosophy is that almost anyone can write and publish a novel if that person is willing to combine patience and persistence with hard work and an open mind. Over the years many of her students have gone on to publish novels.

Donna graduated Phi Beta Kappa from the University of California and holds a J.D. from Hastings College of the Law (the University of California at San Francisco). Her specialties are literary and commercial fiction, women's fiction, and mysteries and thrillers.

Andrea Hurst has worked in the publishing business for more than 20 years as an acquisition and development editor, published writer, ghostwriter, and literary agent. Her editorial and ghostwriting services have been used by NY Times best-selling authors as well as many up and coming writers to advance their careers and achieve their publishing goals. She is a frequent speaker and instructor nationwide at writer's conferences, private venues, and the Whidbey Writers Workshop MFA Program.

An impeccable book proposal and professional manuscript are the best way to catch an editor's attention. Many writers fail to realize that book publishing is a business, and that about 98 percent of books submitted end up rejected. It is more important than ever for writers to do their homework and make sure they are sending out a finely polished version of their work.

Christina Lutman has extensive experience in editing, ghostwriting, and creating book proposals. As an assistant at a literary agency, she has discovered first-time authors and assisted them in developing their projects. Her other areas of expertise include: copywriting; creating marketing collateral, press packets, and web copy; and producing cover and back cover copy for texts. Christina also has an M.A. in English Literature, along with her B.A. in English (with an emphasis in creative writing).

Jane Cutler has published fifteen children's books (picture books, chapter books, novels, and easy-to-reads), among them the prize-winning THE CELLO OF MR. O, DARCY AND GRAN DON'T LIKE BABIES (A Reading Rainbow Book), and MY WARTIME SUMMERS. Jane has been compared to Beverly Cleary and Johanna Hurvitz (The Horn Book Magazine) and to Patricia MacLachlan (Kirkus) and has been awarded the coveted Zena Sutherland Award, The Bank Street College of Education Award, The OppenheimToy Portfolio Best Book of the Year Award, and many others. In addition, Jane has been featured on C-Span, on KQED-TV, and on NPR, and she was chosen by "The Bulletin for the Center for Children's Books" as a 'Rising Star,' and included in the California Reading Association's A Taste of Literacy.

Jane has published numerous short stories for adults and was the recipient of a PEN award for short fiction and of the Herbert Wilner Short Story Award. She has taught children's writing and short story writing at San Francsico State University, at UCSF Ext., at Foothill College, and privately.

Jane has also put in time as an agent, an advertising copywriter, a public relations writer, a speechwriter, a textbook editor, an encyclopedia editor, a developer, writer, and editor of reading and social studies materials, and a political researcher/writer. She received her BA in English from Northwestern University and her MA in Creative Writing from San Francisco State University.

Adair Lara is an author and teacher, a former columnist for the San Francisco Chronicle and formerly executive editor for San Francisco Focus magazine and managing editor for is available for consultation on essay and memoir. She is the author of the memoir, Hold Me Close, Let Me Go, (Random House). Her students include Jackie Winspear, author of the best-selling Maisie Dobbs' series; Janis Newman, author of The Russian Word for Snow" and a forthcoming novel on Mary Todd Lincoln called Mary; Lolly Winston, author of Good Grief; Robin Wolaner, founder of Parenting Magazine and author of Naked in the Boardroom; Terry Gamble, author of several novels including The Water Dancers; Susan Parker, who wrote columns for the San Francisco Chronicle and the book Tumbling After, Peggy Vincent, author of Babycatcher, and David Gottfried, author of Greed to Green.

Adair can help you turn that self- absorbed piece about your cat into an insight into human nature by putting in the epiphany -the insight you gained from your experience-that made it worth writing about. How to find the images and details that will yank a reader out of his or her life and into yours. Adair's own published books include three collections of her columns, the memoir Hold Me Close, Let Me Go, History of Petaluma, a California River Town (Scottwell Associates), and Hanging Out the Wash (Conari Press).

Terence Clarke is the author of three critically-acclaimed novels, The Day Nothing Happened, My Father In The Night and The King of Rumah Nadai. His short stories have appeared in numerous magazines, and he is the writer, producer and co-director of a full-length documentary film now in development entitled Chiquilín, about children in Buenos Aires learning to dance tango with world-renowned tango maestros.

Terry is interested in two areas of writing. For fiction, he will edit your novel and give you solid guidance in what to do with a manuscript that is giving you trouble. He'll make insightful suggestions about how to improve your writing, your story and your characters. He'll also advise you about the publishing industry, about how to find agents and publishers, how to understand contracts, and the ups and downs of working with agents, editors and the media.

Terry also is a business writer/editor of keen ability. While writing his novels, he pursued a very successful career as an executive in marketing and sales in the print and internet software industries.
